This Christmas was full of family, food, happiness, and vinyl. My new found love for records was happily rewarded this Christmas.
Here are the records I added to my collection.
The Waitresses – Wasn’t Tomorrow Wonderful?
The Joykiller – S/T
Bob Dylan – Bringing It All Back Home, Blood on the Tracks
Elvis Costello & The Attractions – Armed Forces, Trust, Punch The Clock, Get Happy!!
Public Image LTD – Album
Stiffs, inc. -Â Nix Nought Nothing
The Beatles – Abbey Road
The Shins – Oh, Inverted World
I also received The DefinitiveJohn Lennon Collection and Bob Dylan – Blonde on Blonde in CD format.
As you can see, music was a primary request on my list this year, and I’m very excited about the albums I received.
The John Lennon Collection was a late addition to my list because I’ve only just begun to explore his solo material. I’ve always considered myself a McCartney fan more than a Lennon fan, but that’s changed as of late. It’s safe to say I now see McCartney as a poppy, happy, radio friendly performer whose music tends to gravitate more towards pop fluff, while I see Lennon as a rock musician with a message of peace and love who was able to write extremely catchy songs.
Abbey Road was an easy addition to the list. It’s by far my favorite Beatles release, so it makes sense it would be my first Beatles vinyl in my collection.
The Joykillers was a late purchase because to be honest, I had never heard of them. I’ve been a T.S.O.L. fan for years, but I never knew two members of T.S.O.L. were in The Joykillers and released some excellent punk on Epitaph Records. It’s an extremely excellent punk album, and the T.S.O.L. sound is easy to hear.
Elvis Costello is one of my all time favorite artists, so I’m actively looking for anything on his discography list. These four albums just happen to be the ones my local record shop had in stock. Granted This Year’s Model and My Aim is True are my favorite Costello albums, but anything by him is a welcome addition to my collection.
A lot of people dismiss The Waitresses as dumb 80s New Wave, but their brand of No Wave was quirky and interesting. Not to mention, as a bass player, listening to their bass lines is a pleasure. The real stand out on the album is No Guilt, the side 1 track 1. It’s a stream of contentiousness song that hooks you in from the get go.
Overall, it was a great Christmas, and I’m very excited about collecting more vinyl in 2010. So, what music did you get for Christmas?

What a great collection. I am a big fan of Elvis Costello, and John Lennon was actually my favourite beatle. All the other music is also excellent. No doubt about it, NOTHING beat vinyl.
